When I think about My Hero Academia, two characters stand at the heart of the story, Izuku Midoriya (Deku) and Katsuki Bakugo. They’re both dynamic, compelling, and critical to the series, but when it comes down to it, I’ve always been in Bakugo’s corner.

It’s not that I dislike Deku. He has admirable qualities like courage, a desire to help others, and perseverance. However, something about his character arc feels inconsistent, especially after he inherits One For All. At times, his selflessness turns into self-centered pride, as though inheriting All Might’s quirk gave him an automatic claim to greatness. Add in his emotional swings, one minute tough, the next overwhelmed, and it’s hard to connect with him truly.

Bakugo, on the other hand, is the picture of consistency. He’s been fiery, determined, and unapologetically himself from the start. Even as he grows and evolves, he stays true to his core. His confidence is unshakable, and his journey feels genuine. You’ll get no sudden personality shifts, no overblown emotional breakdowns, just steady, powerful growth from him. That’s why, for me, Bakugo shines as the stronger and more relatable character.

Bakugo’s Consistency, Strength, and Fiery Determination

Consistency is Bakugo’s Greatest Strength

One of Bakugo’s greatest strengths is his unwavering consistency. From day one, you know who he is. He’s loud, aggressive, tactless, and brutally honest. But that consistency isn’t a flaw. It’s a strength! It shows that he knows exactly who he is and what he wants. He doesn’t second-guess his goals or the path he’s trekking, and even in moments of failure or insecurity, his determination never wavers.

His steadiness is refreshing. While other characters struggle with their identities or change drastically over time, Bakugo’s growth is about refining who he already is and not becoming entirely different.

Unshakable Resolve

Bakugo’s resolve is unmatched. He charges forward confidently, especially when the odds are against him. He’s not reckless; he’s sure of himself. And that self-assurance doesn’t come from arrogance alone. It comes from his hard work and dedication to being the best.

Even when his fiery personality intimidates others or “freaks people out,” it’s rooted in his determination to surpass everyone else. He doesn’t just want to be great; he wants to earn it. That’s the kind of strength that sets him apart.

Earned Growth Without Losing Identity

What makes Bakugo’s character arc so satisfying is how natural his growth feels. He starts as a brash, arrogant rival to Midoriya, but we see layers of vulnerability and introspection over time. His apology to Midoriya, willingness to work with others, and acceptance of his flaws all show incredible development. Yet, despite all this growth, he never stops being Bakugo.

His core traits, such as fire, competitiveness, and pride, remain intact. That’s what makes his evolution feel authentic. He doesn’t need to change who he is to grow; he becomes a better version of himself.

Midoriya is a Study in Self-Centered Pride

From Insecurity to Pride

Midoriya’s selflessness is one of his most admirable qualities at the beginning of the series. Quirkless but determined, he throws himself into danger for others without hesitation. But after inheriting One For All, that selflessness blurs into something else: pride.

It’s almost as if gaining All Might’s quirk made him believe he was destined for greatness. He begins to take on more than he can handle, pushing himself to reckless extremes and shutting out the people around him. What starts as insecurity transforms into a self-centered belief that he must bear the weight of being the next Symbol of Peace.

Emotional Inconsistency

One of the most frustrating things about Midoriya’s character is his emotional inconsistency. He swings wildly between being tough and confident one minute and breaking down into tears the next. While it’s natural for him to show a range of emotions, his constant back-and-forth can feel jarring and make it harder to connect with him as a character.

The Chosen One Burden

Midoriya’s fixation on being the next Symbol of Peace becomes a double-edged sword. While his determination to live up to All Might’s legacy is admirable, it often isolates him. Instead of trusting his friends and allies, he takes on a solo hero complex, convinced that he must shoulder the burden alone.

This self-centered mindset, while unintentional, contrasts sharply with the teamwork and camaraderie Bakugo eventually learns to embrace.

Why Bakugo Stands Out

Relatability in Confidence and Growth

What I love most about Bakugo is how relatable his confidence and growth feel. Far from it, he’s not perfect, but his belief in himself and willingness to work for his goals inspire him. He proves you can stay true to yourself while growing and evolving.

Strength in Consistency

Bakugo’s greatest strength is his consistency. In a world where so many characters are defined by their struggles with identity, Bakugo stands out as someone who knows exactly who he is. That kind of stability is rare and part of what makes him so compelling.

Rare Moments of Vulnerability

Because Bakugo is so consistently fiery and determined, his rare moments of vulnerability hit even harder. When he apologizes to Midoriya or admits his insecurities, it feels meaningful because it’s not something he does often. These moments show that underneath his explosive personality, he’s just as human as anyone else.

Final Thoughts on Bakugo and Midoriya

For me, Bakugo represents everything I love in a character. He’s rough around the edges but consistent, strong, and able to grow without losing sight of who he is. While Midoriya has strengths and a compassionate persona, his emotional inconsistency and self-centered pride make it difficult for him to connect. Bakugo, on the other hand, stands out as a character whose fiery determination and unshakable resolve make him truly unforgettable.

Of course, this is just my perspective. What about you? Who do you root for in this rivial? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
