If you’re a blogger, you’ve probably asked yourself… is my platform the best fit for what I’m trying to accomplish? I know I did. I moved my blog from another hosted site to WordPress a little over seven years ago, and I’ve never looked back. The switch was a turning point, and WordPress has helped me shape my blog into something I’m truly proud of. Over the past two years, I decided to embrace what WP has to offer fully.

What I know is this…

WordPress provides all the tools necessary to expand, personalize, and fully manage your blog. It excels compared to other platforms such as Blogger and Substack Squarespace. You’re not tied to someone else’s platform policies, so you’re not afraid of losing your hard work. When I decided to move my blog to more of a magazine/media hub format, I knew I made the right choice.

Ownership and Control

One of the first lessons I learned after switching to WordPress was the importance of ownership. With WordPress.org, your site is truly yours. You can choose your hosting provider, control your content, and make decisions that align with your long-term goals. There’s no fear of losing your hard work because you’re not tied to someone else’s platform policies.

In Contrast

Blogger is free and easy to use, but Google owns it. If Google discontinues Blogger (as it has done with other services in the past), your blog will disappear. Substack focuses on email-driven newsletters, but your audience and income are platform-dependent. You don’t fully own the connection with your readers. Squarespace gives you more control than Blogger or Substack, but your content is still tied to their ecosystem. Migrating elsewhere can be a hassle.

Control matters when building something as personal and important as a blog. WordPress gives you that.

Customization and Design Options

When I moved to WordPress, one of the first things that impressed me was the sheer number of themes and plugins available. Whatever vision you have for your blog, WordPress can make it a reality. Want a sleek portfolio? A vibrant blog with multimedia content? An e-commerce store? WordPress has options for it all.

Here’s how other platforms stack up to each other.

Blogger customization is minimal. Templates are functional but dated, and even small tweaks often require coding knowledge.

Substack is simple and clean but focused on text-heavy newsletter layouts. There’s little room for personal branding.

Squarespace has beautiful templates and more flexibility than Blogger or Substack, but the design options still feel limited compared to WordPress. Squarespace templates looked great, but you quickly realized that you needed more options to make my blog stand out.

With WordPress, you’re not boxed in. You can adapt and evolve your blog’s design as your vision grows.

Monetization Options

WordPress is the best platform for bloggers to turn their passion into income. Its flexibility allows you to explore multiple revenue streams, including:

Ads (via Google AdSense or other networks)

Affiliate marketing

Subscription-based content

E-commerce (selling digital or physical products)

The Alternatives

Blogger primarily supports AdSense. It’s a basic option with limited scalability.Substack focuses almost entirely on paid subscriptions. While effective for some writers, it limits diversification. Squarespace offers decent options, like selling products or memberships, but lacks WordPress’s versatility.

With WordPress, you can experiment with what works for you: a full-fledged online store or a blog supported by affiliate income.

SEO and Growth Potential

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is non-negotiable if you want people to find your blog. WordPress truly shines here, providing fantastic tools like Yoast SEO that make optimizing your content for search engines easier than ever. With WordPress, you enjoy full control over your URLs, metadata, and keywords, giving you a wonderful advantage in drawing organic traffic.

In Comparison

Blogger offers basic SEO tools, but you have little control over advanced optimization settings. Substack SEO isn’t a focus since it’s geared toward email-driven sharing. This limits its ability to attract new readers via search engines. Squarespace provides built-in SEO tools, but they’re less comprehensive and harder to customize than WordPress.

WordPress helps your blog grow beyond your existing audience, making it the best choice for scaling your content.

Support and Resources

One of the best things about WordPress is its massive community. If you ever run into an issue, chances are someone else has too—and they’ve written about it. From forums to tutorials and professional developers, WordPress users are never short on resources.

Other platforms

Blogger support is limited to Google forums, which can feel outdated and unhelpful. Substack offers basic customer support but lacks the expansive community WordPress has. Squarespace provides decent support, but its smaller community means fewer shared resources.

The WordPress ecosystem is unmatched, giving you the tools and guidance you need to succeed.

Long-Term Viability

As an open-source platform, WordPress is constantly evolving. Developers worldwide contribute to its growth, ensuring it remains relevant and reliable.

Unlike Blogger, which depends on Google’s whims, or Substack, which is still carving out its niche, WordPress is here to stay. While stable, Squarespace feels more limited and less dynamic. In the long term, WordPress is the safest and smartest choice.
