Revisiting Anime Favorites in the Summer of 2024

Re-watching some of my favorite anime during the summer has been a delightful journey down memory lane. Here’s a glimpse into the shows I’ll be revisiting.

Fruits Basket Remake

This 2019 reboot of the beloved shoujo series beautifully adapts Natsuki Takaya’s manga, capturing the emotional depth and intricate character development. The story follows Tohru Honda, a kind-hearted high school girl who, after a family tragedy, finds herself living with the enigmatic Soma family. She soon discovers their secret: twelve family members transform into animals of the Chinese zodiac when hugged by the opposite sex. The series delves into the themes of family, love, and personal growth, making it a touching and heartfelt experience.

Inuyasha

Inuyasha is a popular manga and anime series created by Rumiko Takahashi. The story follows 15-year-old schoolgirl Kagome Higurashi, who is transported from modern-day Tokyo to Japan’s Sengoku period after falling into a well at her family’s shrine. There, she meets Inuyasha, a half-demon seeking the Shikon Jewel—a powerful artifact that can grant great power.

The Shikon Jewel shatters into numerous pieces during a battle with a demon, scattering across Japan. Kagome and Inuyasha form an alliance to collect the jewel shards before they fall into the wrong hands, including those of the evil half-demon Naraku, who seeks the jewel for his malevolent purposes.

Along their journey, a lecherous monk named Miroku, a demon slayer named Sango, and a fox demon named Shippo join them. Together, they confront various foes, unravel mysteries, and forge complex relationships as they tackle the personal challenges of their intersecting pasts.

The series blends action, adventure, romance, and fantasy, and it explores themes of friendship, betrayal, and the struggle between good and evil. Inuyasha’s engaging storytelling and well-developed characters make it a classic in the anime and manga industry.

Samurai Champloo

The term Champloo comes from the Okinawan word chanpuru (チャンプルー), meaning “something mixed” or “stir-fried.” Most famously, it appears in popular culture through the anime series Samurai Champloo, which blends elements of historical samurai action with modern hip-hop culture. In this context, the word champloo signifies the blending and fusion of diverse cultural and stylistic elements to create something unique and innovative.

ThiAnimeme uniquely blends historical samurai action and modern hip-hop culture. Directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, it follows the journey of Mugen, Jin, and Fuu as they search for the “samurai who smells of sunflowers.” The show is known for its dynamic fight scenes, memorable characters, and an eclectic soundtrack that perfectly complements its anachronistic style.

Free!

This anime dives into the world of competitive swimming, focusing on friends who form a high school swim team. Haruka Nanase, a talented swimmer with a love for the water, is at the heart of the story. The series explores themes of friendship, rivalry, and personal ambition, all while delivering stunning animation of swimming sequences that capture the sport’s grace and intensity. Additionally, The Free! Movie: The Final Stroke is a two-part anime series. The first part, titled Free! The Final Stroke – The First Volume was released on September 17, 2021. The second part, Free! The Final Stroke – The Second Volume was released on April 22, 2022.

Sk8 the Infinity

This series brings the thrill of skateboarding to the anime world. It follows Reki, a high school student passionate about skating, and Langa, a transfer student with a snowboarding background, as they enter the underground world of “S,” a secret skateboarding race. The show is a vibrant celebration of youth culture, camaraderie, and the exhilarating freedom of skating.

Final Thoughts

Re-watching anime has reminded me of the diverse storytelling and rich character development that make it such a captivating medium. Each series offers a unique perspective, from the emotional journey in Fruits Basket to the adrenaline-fueled excitement of Sk8 the Infinity. Whether revisiting old favorites or discovering them for the first time, these anime are perfect for a summer binge.
