Held at Tom Lee Park along the banks of the Mississippi River in downtown Memphis, the festival has been a cornerstone of the Memphis in May International Festival since 1977. With roots that stretch back to the 1800s, when African American musicians from across the South gathered on Beale Street to play and connect, this festival carries a cultural legacy that runs deeper than most. Each year, over 100,000 attendees fill Tom Lee Park for three days of programming that spans rock, hip-hop, pop, blues, and everything in between. In 2026, Memphis in May honors Ireland as its featured country, adding an additional cultural dimension to the celebration. If you have never made the trip to Memphis for this one, put it on your list.

July 2026 Festivals
Essence Festival of Culture 2026
Dates: July 3-5, 2026 (Fourth of July Weekend) Location: Caesars Superdome (evening concerts) & Ernest N. Morial Convention Center (daytime), New Orleans, Louisiana
History & Background:
The Essence Festival of Culture is one of the most significant cultural events in America, full stop. Held every Fourth of July weekend in New Orleans and presented by Coca-Cola, Essence Fest is far more than a music festival. It is a celebration of Black joy, artistry, resilience, and community. The evening concert series at the Caesars Superdome brings some of the biggest names in R&B, hip-hop, soul, funk, and gospel to the stage over three unforgettable nights. The daytime programming at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center features panel discussions, author talks, beauty markets, film screenings, and conversations with entrepreneurs, activists, and cultural figures. New Orleans provides the perfect backdrop for all of it.
History is the Essence of Things
I want to take a moment to speak directly to Essence, because I care about this festival and what it represents. Essence has always been built on something very specific: the African American voice, the African American experience, and the kind of music and culture that can only come from that place. That soul, that fire, that history is the center and the core of what Essence Festival has always been. There is a certain energy that African Americans bring to this festival because of its history, and that energy cannot be replicated or replaced.
You have to respect the history. When the festival drifts away from what made it essential, something irreplaceable gets lost. You cannot cut out the flame at the center of a fire and expect it to keep burning the same way. I hope that Essence continues to grow, and I wish the festival nothing but success, but I also hope it never loses sight of where it comes from and the community it was built to celebrate. That community is its heartbeat, and that will never change.
Highlights and Other Important Info
- Lineup Highlights: The first wave of performers for 2026 includes Cardi B, making her first full Essence show, Brandy & Monica, Patti LaBelle, Kehlani, and Latto. Additional performers will be announced leading up to the festival. Full details at essence.com.

Daytime programming at the Convention Center is completely free, open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. Evening Superdome concerts open at 6 PM. The evening concert series is an 18+ event.
- Festival Prep & Safety:
- What to Wear: New Orleans in July is hot and humid. Lightweight, breathable fabrics and comfortable footwear are essential. The Convention Center daytime events are indoors and air-conditioned, but time spent outdoors will be in full summer heat. Never skip the sunscreen.
- Dos and Don’ts: Do take the daytime programming seriously. The panels, discussions, and marketplace are a core part of the Essence experience. Do book your hotel early. New Orleans on Fourth of July weekend is one of the busiest times of the year for the city. Don’t miss the superlounge performances inside the Superdome.
- Staying Safe: Plan your transportation between the Convention Center and the Superdome in advance. The Superdome is a cashless venue, so bring a card for all concessions and merchandise. Stay hydrated in the summer heat.
