CHAPTER 3 – Shadows and Strategy
The heavy steel doors of the vault groaned as they slid open, their sound echoing like a warning. A rush of stale air swept out, carrying with it the lingering scent of burnt incense and cold iron. The artifact sat on its pedestal, motionless, yet its presence was suffocating. The cursed mirror, now sealed in layers of protective charms, should have been dormant.
But the moment I stepped inside, my tattoo flared.
A pulse of heat surged from my chest, the Oni’s mark reacting as if the mirror were calling out to it. My breath hitched. The air inside the vault thickened, an oppressive weight pressing down on my shoulders. Yumi and Kai flanked me, their expressions tense.
“That thing should be sealed,” Kai muttered, adjusting his glasses as he checked his device. The scanner in his hands beeped erratically, the screen flickering with unreadable symbols. “But these readings…D, this artifact isn’t stable.”
“No kidding,” I murmured, stepping closer. The mirror’s surface rippled, distorting my reflection. But instead of just my own face, I saw something else…something watching me from within.
Welcome home, heir.
The voice was low, guttural, and dripping with malice. It wasn’t just in my head—it was in the air, vibrating through the walls of the vault. I stumbled back, hand instinctively reaching for my blade. Yumi drew hers without hesitation, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the room.
“Kaz?” she asked, voice sharp, but I couldn’t look away. The whispers slithered in my ears, sinking deep into my mind.
“You cannot fight fate. Your blood has already decided.”
My fingers curled into a fist. The vault’s seals were supposed to hold. Damn it! Why was this happening?
“D, step back,” Kai warned, his voice rising in urgency. “If it’s responding to you, we need to reinforce the barrier…”
Before he could finish, the vault’s torches flickered violently. A cold wind rushed through the chamber, and for a split second, the room plunged into complete darkness.
Then a single crack split the surface of the mirror.
The sound was deafening, like a gunshot in the confined space. Yumi stepped forward, her blade gleaming in the dim light. “We need to get out of here. Now.”
I nodded, but my feet felt rooted to the ground. The crack in the mirror seemed to pulse, a faint, sickly glow emanating from within.
It was as if the artifact was alive—and it was watching us.
